Tamie Smith

Tamera “Tamie” Smith is one of the top ranked U.S. riders in the sport of eventing and also holds her ICP Level 4 certification.  In addition to having ridden Dressage at the Grand Prix level and having earned multiple Show Jumping accolades, Tamie has made a name for herself in the Eventing spotlight.  

With career highlights that include being named to the 2020 United States Olympic Team (to compete in 2021), a team gold medal at the 2019 Pan American Games, being named to the United States Developing Rider List multiple times (a proven training ground of the United States Olympic Team), competing at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI5*, developing a two-time West Coast Young Event Horse Champion, and being named the 2015 USEF CCI3* National Champion, Tamie takes great pride in each horse she works with. Additionally, Tamie was long-listed for the Pan American Games team in 2011, awarded a US Olympic Grant to compete at the Boekelo CCI3* where she was a member of the Nations Cup team, and competed a member of the winning Nations Cup team at the Bromont CCI3* that same year.  In 2014, Tamie was the USEA 10th Ranked Lady Rider of the Year and the Area VI Rider of the Year. In 2015, Tamie was an Alternate for the United States Eventing Team for the Pan American Games and was crowned the 2015 USEF National CCI3* Champions at Fair Hill. Tamie was the USEA 7th Ranked Rider of the Year in 2015 riding the USEA Horse of the Year, Mai Baum. She was also Area VI Rider of the Year. In 2016, Tamie traveled to Europe to compete several horses with great success. She was the Holekamp/Turner Young Event Horse Lion d’Angers Prize and Grant recipient with her mount Fleeceworks Royal. Tamie and Fleeceworks Royal placed 24th at the 2016 Mondial du Lion FEI World Breeding Eventing Championships for Young Horses at Le Lion d’Angers in France!  Dempsey traveled to Europe with Tamie as well and made his first international appearance in September at Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials in the CIC3* 8/9 Year Old division. In addition, Tamie and Dempsey completed Boekelo CCI3*, jumping clear around a very impressive cross country track.

Tamie’s 2017 was a big one with numerous CIC & CCI wins across the country! Tamie started 2017 with big wins at the Fresno County Horse Park. She won the Fresno County Horse Park CIC1* with Fleeceworks Royal and CIC2* with Glock Pullman. She followed with another win at Galway Downs International in the CIC1* with Mai Baum and CIC2* with Sunsprite Syrius. With numerous wins in between, in April, Tamie rode Fleeceworks Royal to a 4th place finish at the Twin Rivers CIC3* and Wembley to 2nd place. At Bromont International CCI3* Tamie finished in 15th with Wembley. The three-star horses finished their season in fine form at Fair Hill International. Both Wembley and Fleeceworks Royal finished inside the Top 20 at their first CCI3*s of their careers. To cap off the year, Tamie and Fleeceworks Royal were named to the US Equestrian 2018 Eventing Winter Training List.

Tamie’s success continued in 2018. Tamie piloted Sunsprite Syrius to a win in the CIC3* at Galway Downs International in March. Next, she rode Wembley to a 3rd place finish at the Twin Rivers CIC3*. In April, Tamie rode Wembley at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI4*. They finished 14th overall in Wembley’s four-star debut. To close out her spring season, Tamie rode Fleeceworks Royal to win the Rebecca Farm CIC3* in July. In September, Tamie rode Mai Baum to win from start to finish the Adequan USEA Gold Cup Advanced Championship. In October, Tamie won the 5-Year-Old Young Event Horse East Coast Championships with MB MaiStein. In that same month, Tamie and Fleeceworks Royal finished 9th at Boekelo CCI3* in the Netherlands. To finish out the 2018 competition season, Tamie and Danito won the Ocala Jockey Club International CCI1* on their dressage score of 22.6. At the end of 2018, Tamie ranked 7th Overall on the USEA Leaderboard and 3rd Lady Rider of the Year!

In 2019, Tamie’s year began with a win at Fresno County Horse Park CCI3*-S with Danito. She then followed with another win at Galway Downs International CCI3*-S and Twin Rivers CCI3*-L with Mai Baum. Next, Tamie traveled to England to compete in the CCI4*-S at Bramham Park with Wembley. The trip was a great success! Wembley delivered a solid performance across all three phases of competition and brought home a top 20 finish. Tamie was then chosen to be part of Team USA at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Tamie and Mai Baum contributed to the USA’s Team Gold and finished 17th individually. Her success continued and in August Tamie rode En Vogue and Danito to Champion and Reserve Champion in the Intermediate division at the 2019 American Eventing Championships in Lexington, Kentucky. In September, Tamie placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at Twin Rivers CCI4*-S with Mai Baum, En Vogue, and Danito. The following month she and Mai Baum traveled to the Netherlands to compete in the Boekelo CCIO4*-L on USA’s Nations Cup team, where they finished 11th individually. Soon after, they were included on the updated Pre-Elite Training List as part of U.S. Performance Director Erik Duvander’s U.S. Eventing Pathway Program. Tamie rounded out the 2019 season at Galway Downs, where she finished 2nd in the CCI4*-L with En Vogue, 1st and 3rd in the CCI3*-L with Danito and No App for That respectively, and 4th in the CCI2*-L with Mai Stein.

Stemming from the belief that every horse can teach us something valuable if we give them a chance, Tamie is known for training and developing difficult horses, helping them to find their purpose and achieve greatness.
